A fun and popular activity to do with kids during spring time is always an Easter Egg hunt! This is a great game to review or practice prepositions such as: over, under, above, below, in front of, behind, inside, outside, beside, between, along etc. If you are in Ontario this meets the grade 1 curriculum expectations for math under: Location and Movement.
First have the students practice the prepositions by repeating the word after the teacher, flashcards with a picture of the action works best for this. Discuss the differences between what it means to be over something versus above something. These can be common misconceptions in the English Language, especially for ELL (English Language Learners) learners. After they have seen an image of the preposition and understood its definition have them act it out with an object. Using an object such as a plastic egg the teacher will call out a preposition and the students will respond by putting their egg in that location. For example, if the teacher says “above” the students will put the egg above their heads. The teacher should model what that action would look like first prior to playing the game so students don’t get confused if they are making a different action to the same preposition.
Once the students have practiced prepositions they can engage in an independent activity. Prior to the Easter egg hunt the teacher must hide eggs around the room. Each student must find as many eggs as possible, but they are not to remove any of the eggs once they have found them. About 20 eggs should suffice – about 1 to 2 for every student. The students will get a worksheet that they must fill out with the location of each egg that they found. Make sure to remind students that no more than 2 people can be at an egg at one time, if someone else is already there they must search for another one and return when no one is there. This avoids crowding over one egg and students copying off of one another. Once they have completed their worksheet and found all 20 eggs they can come sit on the carpet and share their answers with the class.
Enjoy and have a hopping good time!
